WHAT IS CLAY-COATED, WAXED, & TREATED PAPER?

Dart’s paperboard products are made from large paperboard rolls that are upwards of 13,000 feet long (that’s almost two and a half miles!). Cups, plates and containers are cut from the paperboard.

Dart uses different coatings to create moisture barriers on paper products. Clay, waxed or treated coatings offer additional rigidity on paper products while still providing an excellent moisture barrier.

CLAY-COATED PAPER

Clay-coated paper board is an SBS substrate coated with a fine layer of clay. The clay-based coating and the overprint varnish coating are non-absorbent which protects the print and prevents against grease and moisture soak through.

WAXED PAPER

Waxed paper consists of two types of paper treatments: Pre-treated (dry wax) and Post-treated (wet wax).

Pre-Treated Waxed Paper (Dry Wax) is made by applying the wax coating to the paper with a special roller and high heat before converting the paper into finished products. This process allows the wax to be absorbed into the pores of the paper, resulting in an undetectable, dry finish and light moisture barrier on the surface of the finished product.

Post-Treated Waxed Paper (Wet Wax) involves coating the paper with wax after it’s been made into a cup. The heavier layer of wax is visually apparent and can be felt on the product itself. Wet wax cups are extremely sturdy and provide an excellent moisture barrier.

OTHER TREATED PAPER

Grease Resistant Treated Paper is made by mixing in the grease resistant, PFAs Free additives to the wet end of the paper mill process before the rolls of paper are formed. This process results in an undetectable, dry finish on the surface of the finished product.
